Core business

Three power plants in Malaysia and Vietnam: 650 MW combined-cycle gas, 1,200 MW supercritical thermal and 78 MW near-shore wind.

01Power generation

1,928 MW developed across three plants in Malaysia and Vietnam, representing roughly USD 3.2 billion in project value.

Each project was financed on the operating record of the one before it. Full plant descriptions and specifications follow.

combined cycle

Kuala Sungai Baru, Perlis · Malaysia · Developed by Janakuasa shareholder

The Perlis combined-cycle gas plant, with red and white striped stacks
Perlis, Malaysia — three ALSTOM GT 13E2 gas turbines

A combined-cycle gas-fired power plant in which exhaust heat from the gas turbines is recovered to raise steam and drive a steam turbine. The configuration comprises three ALSTOM GT 13E2 gas turbines, three heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine generator — a total plant capacity of 675 MW in combined-cycle operation.

The plant sits on a 37.5-hectare coastal site at Kuala Sungai Baru. Electricity is transmitted via a 17 km, 275 kV line into the national utility's 275 kV system, plus two short 132 kV double circuits into its 132 kV line.

Natural gas is supplied through a 25 km, 18-inch lateral pipeline connected to the national oil and gas company's main line. Together, the 275 kV and 132 kV transmission lines and the gas spur form the plant's interconnection facilities.

Its proven track record of stability and strong cash flows is what made everything that followed possible.

In 2005 Janakuasa decided to seek opportunities beyond Malaysia — a new chapter made possible by the stability and cash flows the Perlis plant had shown since commissioning. India, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand were all assessed.

Vietnam's government recognised the track record, and in 2010 the company received state approval to develop a 1,200 MW coal-fired plant at Duyen Hai 2 under a Build–Operate–Transfer scheme.

Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2 was appointed to carry out the feasibility studies, subsequently reviewed and approved by Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on 3 August 2016.

The first 600 MW unit achieved commercial operation in June 2021. The project was developed by Janakuasa alongside its partners.

78MW near-shore

Hiep Thanh “Tra Vinh II” · Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam

Wind turbines standing over open farmland
Tra Vinh II — eighteen turbines, 78 MW

In 2018 Janakuasa decided to pivot toward greener energy in support of global decarbonisation. The result was the right to build, operate and maintain a 78 MW wind power plant in Tra Vinh Province — eighteen turbines at the near-shore Hiep Thanh site in South Vietnam.

Tra Vinh II carries high development impact for local sustainable development, and plays a part in Vietnam's contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It matters especially for adding renewable capacity and creating employment in a remote area where opportunities are limited.

The plant supports Vietnam's green energy targets — 800 MW of wind by 2020, 2,000 MW by 2024 and 6,000 MW installed by 2030.

Janakuasa aims to support the government's ambition of reducing reliance on fossil fuels, hydropower and energy imports. We are looking to develop further phases of wind power of up to another 400 MW.
